NATURAL SKIN CARE

Skin is one of the largest organs in the body. It is easily exposed to infection, disease or injury. Nowadays many people are prone to skin problems like acne, wrinkles, agespots, sunburn, dryness etc. These are reasoned out as a result of the natural process of aging, adolescence, hormonal changes etc.

We can classify the skin types into 5 categories:

  • Dry skin: Dry skin is a result of under-active or inactive oil glands that do not produce enough sebum (oily secretion of the sebaceous gland) to keep the skin naturally lubricated. This type of skin gives a dull appearance, feels dry and itchy and becomes sensitive easily.
  • Oily skin: This type of skin is caused by over-active oil glands that produce excess sebum resulting in skin that has greasy and slippery texture. Oily skin is frequently prone to acne.
  • Normal skin: This skin is not too oily or not too dry. Normal skin is consistently moist and vibrant.
  • Sensitive skin: It is more of a skin condition than a skin type. It can be oily or dry. Sensitive skin is delicate and easily reacts to environmental conditions and even to mild cosmetics with synthetic color, fragrance etc.
  • Combination skin: In this skin type people have at least two different type of skin at any given time; For example, the T-zone which covers the forehead, nose and chin will be oily while the skin around cheeks, eyes, mouth will be normal

According to Ayurveda, skin types are based on the individual constitution. In general, it can be either vata/ pitta/ kapha or a combination of these three.

  • Vata: The skin is dry, thin with fine pores, delicate and cold on touch. Tendency to develop early wrinkles is more in this skin type.
  • Pitta: The skin is fair, soft and photosensitive.
  • Kapha: This skin type is thick, oily and soft. It develops wrinkles much later compared to the other two but more prone to accumulate toxins resulting in acne and other skin rashes.

A good skin care with natural ingredients and healthy lifestyle choices can help delay the ageing process and prevent various skin problems.
