“Shankari a female, aged 48 years was very active in the household work. Looking after her children’s need, interacting with her friends in the park during walking hours and frequent travelling to her relative’s house was an easy task for her. But since few months she began to develop severe pain in her knee joints which was making it difficult for her to carry out her daily activities. She then visited the doctor who diagnosed that she was suffering from Arthritis.
Eventually she starting taking painkillers to get relief from the pain”
An important point to be highlighted here would be that just symptomatic relief of pain is not the final solution, It is very important to investigate and understand the cause of the pain through detailed physical examination, radiology and pathological tests and treat the cause.
Pain, a protective response of the body to any kind of internal or external injury to the tissues is one of the main symptoms of Arthritis. It can either be acute, that is, present for less than 6 weeks duration or chronic that persists for more than six weeks. Most of the times, pain subsides after the cessation of injury and reversal of damage with medication & treatment.
Ayurveda approach to pain management in Arthritis: JOINT REJUVENATION
- Janu Pichu – An external treatment for the knee joints in cases where there is mild intermittent pain
- Acute cases
- Janu Basti – An external treatment for the knee joints .This therapy helps in reducing pain and swelling. It also helps in strengthening joints and ligaments.
- Abhyanga with pottali Sweda: A treatment which includes fomentation done using medicated herbs/powders; effective in joint pain & other musculoskeletal conditions.
- Chronic cases
- Panchakarma – Purification therapies like Virechana followed by Basti for obesity related arthritis along with other therapies which is applicable as per the condition.
These above therapies are aimed towards reducing inflammation, improving tissue nutrition, promoting tissue healing, improve circulation, regularise lymphatic drainage and reduce swelling. This approach to management of pain in Shathayu Ayurveda is multipronged and is targeted to treat the cause and not just the pain.
